I have a tecra that I got minus the OS disk. It needs a reformat, and came with an XP PRo license sticker. Can I use a generic XP install cd to put XP back on using the original license number?
Yes sir you can, it will create a fresh copy of xp, no partitions or any junk ware that came with your computer. yo will have to enter your key, bt that’s it for that. also oyu will have to download your drivers. I usually use a secodn computer then load all the networking drivers form toshiba onto a usb thumb drive. a quick transfer and running of the driver installers and oyu are up and running.
The key on the bottom of your laptop is an OEM key and will not always work with a RETAIL copy of the CD. Furthermore, if your Tecra is a tablet (which I believe that model is), you need to install TabletPC edition, which is an entirely different CD.
Unfortunately I cannot link you up with any sources, however, I know as I own 3 laptops and a desktop. The TabletPC edition requires a different CD, even though it goes through the exact same process. Here’s the weird bit – If you own a TabletPC version of the XP cd, it will accept a regular XP key, but not the other way around…
There are different CDs for Tablet, Media Centre and regular XP…
Once again, they use almost identical files, just a different license validation system during install.

Hope this helps!
Not always.

Yes, provided it is the same version of XP as the license.
