I have xp. Thinking about upgrading to 7 but haven’t found a good way to transfer or preserve files and game saves to the new OS. Is Microsoft looking into it, is there a way to go to vista then to 7? Anything?
I don’t think its possible to upgrade to 7 and not lose all the data, unless you do an incremental backup of the things you want to save from Win XP O.S. Sorry Hope this helps
The only way it MIGHT work is to buy an XP to Vista upgrade, then buy the Vista (version) to W7 (same version) upgrade. Even then, there could be serious issue trying it…and you’d be better off just buying the retail version of W7 for the cost of the two upgrade packages.
As for non-game files (i.e.: homework, downloaded PDFs, etc), copy the files you want to a USB key and then copy them back afterwards.
As for converting XP to W7…NO…Microslut has specifically stated they will NOT be developing an upgrade kit for XP.
Sorry.
Oh…for save games, you *may* be able to transfer them to a USB key and then transfer them back after the new installs are done. Don’t know if it will work on OS to OS, but I used to do that with Dungeon Siege and Diablo characters…bring the save game to my friend’s place (he has 4 computers in his workroom), play LAN games there, and then play SP games with the same character at home.
You’ll need some special software to upgrade from windows XP to Windows 7. Microsoft did not allow for a “in-place” upgrade from XP to 7. Go figure. Here’s a link to some software that you can install to get the upgrade completed.
Going from XP to Windows 7 requires you to backup data since you have to clean install Windows 7. Take a look here for help on backup up your data: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971759/en-us
Coming from XP you have to back up things you need then move them back later. No, Microsoft isn’t “looking into it.”
You should technically be able to upgrade from XP to Vista then from Vista to Windows 7, but that’s very much not advised, very time consuming, and likely to lead to error.
Figure out where things like your files and game saves are stored, back them up, and put them back after you install Windows 7.
