Hi!
I am good with computers, but this is a question that i cannot answer.
I have a desktop with vista and a notebook with XP
Can i take the vista software from my desktop and install it on my notebook?
Can i download a trial version of vista and use it on my notebook and enter the product key that is on my desktop so that it is not a trial version anymore?

First, you legally can not have it installed on two computers at once. The license states it is for one computer only. Now, if it was a retail version of Vista, you are allowed to completely uninstall it from one computer and install it on another as per the license. It has to no longer be on any other computer though.
If the Vista on your desktop was on it when you purchased the computer (i.e. it is a dell, hp, etc.) then you have an OEM version of Vista and this can NOT be transfered from one computer to another. OEM is linked to a specific computer and can never be transfered.
>>Can i take the vista software from my desktop and install it on my notebook?
It depends on what your license agreement is that you purchased. Usually, however, it’s one copy per device. Again, though, it depends on what your specific license says
>>Can i download a trial version of vista
There is no free trial of vista, unless you get it at some virus-riddled location that pretends to be a “free vista here” web site
>>and use it on my notebook and enter the product key that is on my desktop so that it is not a trial version anymore?
Even if it were free, no, you cannot use the key from your current version and apply it to a free version.
For #1 above, if in doubt, try this microsoft link. It provides the end user agreement info:

Legally … NO… The product key will not work as well.
>Can i take the vista software from my desktop and install it on my notebook?
No. The programs needed to install Vista aren’t installed when Vista is. You’ll need a Vista installation disk.
>Can i download a trial version of vista
There is no such thing. You have to install the only version there is – a full one.
>and use it on my notebook and enter the product key that is on my desktop
Only if you deactivate it on your desktop. You can have a product key activated on only one computer at a time. (This isn’t a legal issue – if you try to activate the second one it won’t work, unless you call Microsoft and have them deactivate the first one.)
Backup and transfer your Windows Vista product key:
