Of course AVG is known for their free software anti-virus people can download. This software however must be paid for. At $40 it is no bargain either. One could buy from companies like Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro for less. These are all established players in the anti-virus game unlike AVG–which is known as the free anti-virus company.
I had a problem with the install of my product and the support was frankly a joke. It said I could pay for support, for my brand-new program. Thanks AVG for throwing me under the bus. Pay for support for your product which is brand new? I could buy a legitimate product from any of the known companies above and have free support which doesn’t consist of playing email tag with someone from India.
This thing is going right back for a return. I am going back with Trend Micro where I get free support and get to speak with a live human being. Until AVG gets real customer support it will only be good for free software downwloads! The safest thing you can do is not buy this software.

I bought this product after reading about AVG and its glowing reviews. However, I had a problem with the install on my second computer. The firewall simply would not install. I tried the online fixes at AVG’s Website but none of them worked.
I had to email “customer support,” since apparently AVG is too cheap to provide a phone number. Someone named Lakshmi, I am sure from India, emailed me back but his fix did not work.
I would recommend Trend Micro over this want-to-be anti-virus. Trend has toll-free technical support and you get to speak with a live body, instead of being hung out to dry with second-rate support from India!

I would have to say there are far superior choices available. Bitdefender and Gdata are two I use. There is also Avira, which offers a excellent free program, the paid program was steep then when I owned it, 49.95. Norton and McAFee are really heavily advertised but are not the best. I mean look at Microsoft, they bought Thunderbyte antivirus years ago from a European antivirus software maker and it assimilated into what is currently Defender. You want really good threat software look to the superior choices, AVG does not even compare, read the certifications of testing labs that do compare antivirus programs…unbiased….thats the key word, not the ones bought and paid for with Norton and McAFee commenters.

I’ve used Norton & McAfee more times than I can count and I have uninstalled them more times than I can count. A few years ago I found AVG’s free edition and had used that. About 2 years ago I decided to try the paid edition and I have kept with the paid edition since then. I have 6 computers at home so having a multi-licensed product is absolutely fantastic! If you missed it, this product covers 3 computers. The paid edition has a lot more “bells and whistles” for protection that it only makes sense to get it. I truly enjoy the extra protection that comes with the paid edition.
Pros: This software doesn’t bog down your computer. For me, this is the most important. In my experience Norton and McAfee are resource hogs and have slowed down my computer quite a bit. With AVG I don’t have the same issue. It does stop threats. I am pretty cautious, but still things sneak in. I haven’t had a virus infect my computer since I have been using AVG. (I can’t say the same for McAfee.)
Cons: The firewall feature (yes, you want this) the firewall updates with new programs you run, etc. While this is nice, it likes to let you know it is updating your profile. You don’t need to respond, but it tells you anyway. Only happens when you run something new, but still it annoys me a little. So I took off 1/2 of a star for that. I took off 1/4 of a star because I have had (only twice) problems where the firewall blocked outgoing traffic for some strange reason and I had to reboot. Every single firewall I have ever used has this exact same problem. I’m an old user of Zone Alarm and theirs did it a lot more frequently. So, since I believe this is an issue inherent with any software firewall, I’m only taking off 1/4 of a star. The last 1/4 of a star I took off was because their are idiots out there that make viruses and therefore I am forced to buy an anti-virus. I know, it isn’t their fault, but it is only a 1/4 star!
Summary: In today’s day and age we have to protect ourselves. There are many virus we can catch from others. Because AVG is so thin and small, it feels like you hardly have any protection on at all. But it is just as strong and gives you all the protection you want and need.
