The upgrades for Vista are relatively cheap, even for Ultimate upgrades. I only had to delete one file to install it, and that was no problem. Symantec has upgraded Internet Security 2007 to download free. Personally, I like it. My other software presented no problems.

Microsoft has to be the least innovative software company out there. Vista is a blatant Mac OS X rip off, and a badly done one at that. This Windows update is a huge CPU and memory hog which would require most people to get a new computer to make it useable. And if you're going to get a new computer anyway, just get a Mac.

Vista honestly is a vital necessity for the progress of...well...everything, considering the vast majority of the world runs on Windows. We have been bogged down too long with the same system having the same limitations and flaws, flaws that have been patched here and there rather than truly solving the overall problem.

I have been running Vista:RC2 for a long time now, and being someone who "lives on" and "lives for" their computer, I can say that it is a blessing. The official release of Vista Ultimate has a number of notable improvements from the RC2; and considering that the majority of the world is running Windows already, the upgrade is all that is necessary.

To give you an idea of how old XP is:
When it was released, I was an UNDERCLASSMAN in high school. Today, I am a Chemical Engineer with two degrees.
Choosing to keep XP (6+ years old) would be similar to choosing to keep Windows 95 in 2001 or 2002.

I promise you won't be dissappointed with the upgrade, especially if you system is powerful.

My system specs:
HP Media Center PC
3GB RAM
3.4GHz Pentium 4 HT
512MB ATI Radeon Graphics Card running two big LCD displays
2 TV Tuner Cards

Microsoft needs money from time to time. Therefore, Windows Vista. Need happens. I don't own vista, so it's entirely unfair to review vista from a user's standpoint.

However, from an onlooker's standpoint this is the artsy fartsy version. Silly translucent windows; a bunch of graphical interfaces, and presumably its just a hell of a lot easier for the new guy with the computer eye. The tech geek in me says "buy it for the hidden treasures it beholds", but the practical side of me says "hell no."

If you need any version of windows, always go with the new. If you are concerned with upgrading check out the (1-100) reasons to upgrade on Microsoft's site before you buy. It will either be a revelation or five minutes of unadultered laughs. (Let's just say 1-20 is highly uncompelling, and suggests you may not have ever used XP before.)
